Bringing a new baby into the world is one of the most magical and life-changing experiences you’ll ever have. As a newborn photographer, I know just how quickly those first days fly by—and how important it is to freeze those sweet, fleeting moments before they’re gone.
If you’re wondering when the best time is to schedule a newborn photoshoot, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common questions I get from new parents. So, let’s dive into the timing, what to expect, and how to prepare for a session that beautifully preserves this precious chapter of your family’s story.
The Ideal Timeframe for a Newborn Photoshoot
The best time to photograph a newborn is within the first 5 to 14 days after birth.

During this window, babies are still in that sleepy, curly stage—they spend most of their time napping and are more likely to settle into those adorable, womb-like poses. Their delicate skin is also still smooth, and any signs of baby acne or colic typically haven’t appeared yet.
After about two weeks, babies begin to stretch out, become more alert, and are less likely to stay still or sleep through posing. That doesn’t mean you can’t do a newborn session after two weeks—it just means we may take a more relaxed, wrapped, or lifestyle-based approach to keep your baby cozy and comfortable.
Newborn Weight Considerations
For the safety and comfort of your baby during the photoshoot, I recommend scheduling the session once your newborn has reached a healthy weight of at least 2.6 kilograms (approximately 5.7 pounds) or more. Babies at or above this weight tend to have better muscle tone and can handle gentle posing more comfortably.
If your baby is under this weight or still very fragile, we can adjust the session to focus on simple, natural poses and lifestyle shots that require less handling. Your baby’s safety is always my top priority.
What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?
Babies are on their own schedule, and that’s perfectly okay! If your little one arrives early (or later than expected), we’ll adjust your session accordingly. I always build flexibility into my calendar to accommodate these natural changes.
For preemies or NICU stays, we may wait a little longer—safety and your baby’s health always come first. Once your baby is stable and home, we can plan the session at the pace that’s right for you and your family.
When to Book Your Newborn Session
It’s best to book your newborn photoshoot during your second or early third trimester. This guarantees a spot on my calendar and gives us plenty of time to chat about your vision—whether you’re dreaming of soft neutrals, elegant florals, or cozy lifestyle moments with the whole family.
Once baby arrives, we’ll confirm a date based on your delivery and how everyone is doing.
What If I Miss the “Newborn Window”?
It’s never too late to capture love—every stage is worth remembering.
Don't worry. Beautiful images can still be created even if your baby is a few weeks (or months!) old. These sessions may focus more on connection—eye contact, tiny smiles, snuggles with mom and dad—and can be just as emotional and meaningful.
Every baby is unique, and your story deserves to be captured in a way that feels authentic, no matter the timing.
There’s no feeling like holding your brand-new baby in your arms—tiny fingers, sleepy yawns, and that sweet new baby smell. These moments are fleeting, but photography gives us a way to hold onto them forever.
If you’re expecting and thinking about scheduling a newborn session, I’d love to help you preserve these memories with gentle, timeless imagery. Whether it’s your first baby or your fourth, it’s always worth capturing.
Let’s make something beautiful, together.
