What to Expect During Your Maternity Photography Session

Pregnancy is such a meaningful season, and maternity photos are a beautiful way to preserve it with intention, emotion, and care. Whether this is your first baby or your third, knowing what to expect can help you feel more relaxed, prepared, and excited for your session.

As a maternity photographer serving Seattle and the surrounding area, I create sessions that feel calm, thoughtful, and personal. From helping you decide when to book to guiding you through wardrobe and posing, every part of the experience is designed to help you feel confident and seen.

If you’ve been wondering what a Seattle maternity session actually feels like, here’s everything you can expect.

1. When to Schedule Your Seattle Maternity Session

The ideal time for a maternity session is usually between 28 and 34 weeks. During this window, your bump has a beautiful shape that photographs wonderfully, while you still tend to feel comfortable enough for gentle movement, walking, and posing.

Every pregnancy is different, of course. Some moms show earlier, some later, and comfort levels vary from person to person. That’s why this timing is a guide, not a rule.

I usually recommend booking your maternity session at least 1 to 2 months in advance, especially if:

  • you’d love an outdoor session at golden hour
  • you’re hoping for a weekend date
  • you want time to plan outfits or use pieces from my client closet

Booking early gives us time to create a session that feels easy, beautiful, and well planned rather than rushed.

2. What to Wear for Your Maternity Photos

One of the biggest questions moms have is what to wear. And honestly, that’s completely normal. Choosing outfits during pregnancy can feel overwhelming, especially when you want your photos to feel timeless and flattering.

That’s why I offer styling support to help make the process easier. I guide my clients based on the overall look they want for their session, whether that feels soft and romantic, minimal and elegant, or a little more editorial.

For many maternity sessions, flowing fabrics, soft textures, and well-fitted silhouettes photograph beautifully. Long dresses, sheer layers, draped fabrics, and neutral tones often work especially well because they highlight the shape of your bump in a soft and graceful way.

Before your session, I also help with preparation details so you feel more confident and less stressed about the little things.

3. Should You Choose a Studio or Outdoor Maternity Session?

One of the first choices you’ll make is whether you want your maternity photos taken indoors or outdoors. Both are beautiful, and the best choice really depends on your comfort level, personal style, and the feeling you want your images to have.

Studio maternity sessions

Studio sessions are perfect if you want a more controlled, peaceful environment. They feel calm, intimate, and polished. With studio lighting and a carefully designed space, we can create portraits that feel timeless, elegant, and focused completely on you.

If you love a clean, refined look or want a session without worrying about weather, studio maternity photos are a beautiful option.

Outdoor maternity sessions

Outdoor sessions feel more open, natural, and organic. The light, movement, and scenery add softness and emotion to the images, especially during golden hour.

If you’re drawn to natural light and want your photos to feel airy, connected, and a little more candid, an outdoor maternity session may be the perfect fit.

If you’re unsure, I can help you decide based on the season, your vision, and what feels most like you.

4. What Happens During the Session

Your maternity session is meant to feel relaxed, not rushed. Most sessions move at a gentle pace so you have time to settle in, feel comfortable, and ease into the experience.

You do not need to know how to pose. I guide you through everything in a way that feels natural and flattering. From soft standing poses to gentle movement and connection-based moments, I’ll help create images that highlight your bump, your beauty, and your story.

If your partner or children are joining, I also guide those moments so they feel genuine and emotional instead of stiff or overly posed. Some of the most meaningful images often come from those quiet interactions — a hand on your belly, a forehead touch, a little laugh, a child leaning into you.

The goal is always the same: to create maternity images that feel like you.

5. What Happens After the Session

Once your session is complete, the next step is choosing the images you love most. After your shoot, I’ll send you a soft-proof gallery where you can view the best images from your session and select your favorites.

From there, I carefully retouch each chosen image by hand to create a final gallery that feels polished, timeless, and true to the moment.

Your final images are delivered in a high-resolution online gallery for downloading, sharing, and printing. If you’d like to turn your images into keepsakes for your home, I can also guide you through print and album options.

A Seattle Maternity Session Should Feel Meaningful, Not Stressful

Maternity photography is about more than documenting a bump. It’s about preserving this season in a way that feels honest, beautiful, and full of emotion.

Whether you’re feeling radiant, tender, excited, or a little overwhelmed, this chapter deserves to be remembered with care. My goal is to create a maternity session experience that helps you feel supported, confident, and celebrated from beginning to end.
