Newborn photography is more than adorable poses and soft blankets — it’s about creating a peaceful space where your baby feels safe, comfortable, and loved.
At Photoshots by MS, serving Everett, Bothell, and Seattle, every session is guided by calm energy and gentle care. The secret behind that calm? What I call “The 5 S’s.”
These five techniques help soothe your baby naturally, allowing me to capture dreamy, heartfelt portraits that reflect the warmth of early parenthood.
1. Swaddle
Swaddling is one of the most comforting sensations for a newborn. It mimics the feeling of being in the womb — snug, secure, and safe.
During your session, I use soft, breathable wraps that gently support your baby while keeping them cozy and relaxed.
This not only helps them settle but also creates those sweet, serene images parents love.
2. Shush
The “shhh” sound is more than just soothing — it’s familiar.
Inside the womb, babies hear the rhythmic sounds of the heartbeat and blood flow.
In my studio, soft white noise and a calm voice recreate that sense of comfort, helping babies relax and setting the perfect tone for a peaceful newborn session.
3. Sway (or Swing)
Gentle motion works wonders for newborns. They’re used to movement — it’s how they were rocked before birth.
Before posing, I often sway or lightly bounce the baby to help them drift into a deep, restful sleep. I also use a Lulla-Vibe™ Vibrating Pad during the session to make newborn comfortable.
This makes the entire photography experience smoother and more enjoyable for both baby and parents.
4. Suck
Sucking is one of a newborn’s most natural ways to self-soothe, and it can be supported with a pacifier (plenty of options are available on amazon), a soother, or sometimes breastfeeding.
Whether it’s a pacifier, a quick feeding break, or a gentle breastfeed, this tiny reflex can instantly calm a baby.
I always encourage parents to follow their baby’s rhythm — because comfort comes first. Once your baby is happy and settled, those timeless sleepy portraits follow naturally.
5. Side Pose (or Stomach)
While newborn safety is always the top priority, gentle side or tummy poses (done safely and supported) often help babies relax.
These cozy, curled-up positions can ease gas, reduce startle reflexes, and bring out that womb-like comfort — perfect for natural, heartwarming portraits.
Why the 5 S’s Matter?
The 5 S’s aren’t photography tricks — they’re about understanding babies. Every baby has their own rhythm, and by following these gentle steps, I’m able to create sessions that are calm, connected, and deeply personal.
At Photoshots by MS, my goal is to create an experience that feels just as beautiful as the photos look — full of warmth, patience, and love.
Because when your baby feels safe and calm, every image tells a story of peace, purity, and the incredible beauty of new beginnings.
